The International Special Tribunal for the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation for committing the crime of aggression against Ukraine may become operational in 2024.

This was stated by Fedir Venislavsky, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, the President's representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Censor.NET reports with reference to Ukrinform.

According to him, practically all the civilized countries of the world supported the creation of an international special tribunal to bring Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and his closest entourage to account for the aggressive war they launched against Ukraine. However, Venislavsky noted that the issue of the format of the tribunal is still debatable.

He clarified that some partners insist that the legal system of Ukrainian law should be applied with the involvement of international judges to bring the Russian military-political leadership to justice. Venislavsky noted that the most acceptable option for Ukraine is the creation of a separate special international tribunal similar to the Nuremberg trial. Currently, there is an active discussion about the final format of the special tribunal.

Regarding the timing of the creation and start of work of the relevant judicial mechanism, Venislavsky noted: "As soon as we agree on all positions with partners and come to the final version - the process of creating a court will not take much time, because all the documents will be ready. If we are optimistic, I think that this court will work at the end of this year, and if realistic, I think it will happen already in 2024."

He added that the International Criminal Court, Ukrainian courts, as well as a special international tribunal created in the future can be used to prosecute all war criminals.
