Rada approves draft law on minority rights necessary for Ukraine’s accession to the EU
This was reported by People's Deputy Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Censor.NET reports.
A total of 317 people's deputies voted in favor of the document. All factions worked on this version of the draft law.
The adoption of draft law No. 10288-1 is a requirement of the European Commission. It is important for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
The draft law provides for the following changes:
- the protection of the right to use languages of national minorities of Ukraine is ensured by the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights;
- guaranteeing the right to use a minority language in the educational process alongside the state language;
- expanding the right to use minority languages in media and publishing.
Thus, private higher education institutions will have the right to freely choose the language of instruction, which is an official EU language (teaching one, several or all disciplines, performing individual tasks and conducting control), while ensuring the study of the state language as a separate discipline.
At the same time, it is proposed to add a provision to the law that the expansion of the rights of minority languages does not apply to the Russian language.
