German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has called for the reintroduction of compulsory military conscription in Germany.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to BILD.

As noted, compulsory military service in Germany was abolished in 2011. This leads to an acute shortage of personnel for the Bundeswehr.

Pistorius proposed to introduce a conscription system similar to Sweden. There, since 2017, all young men and women have been considered liable for military service. They are examined by a military commission to determine their readiness for service, but only a small proportion of them are drafted.

Currently, military service in Germany is completely voluntary. In addition, women in Germany have always been exempt from military service under the Basic Law of 1949. The Swedish model would mean changing these rules.

German military experts welcome this initiative, believing that this is the only way to attract more people to the Bundeswehr and overcome the personnel crisis. However, the liberal FDP party, which is part of the ruling coalition, has already called it a "huge encroachment on civil liberties".
