A photo of a Ukrainian prisoner of war allegedly killed by the occupiers was posted online, and the Ukrainian Ombudsman appealed to the ICRC and the UN.

This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, Censor.NET reports.

"A photo has been posted online, probably with the body of a Ukrainian prisoner whose head and limbs were cut off by the Russians. This is not just a violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, it is the behaviour of inhumans! I would like to point out that according to international humanitarian law, no prisoner of war may be subjected to physical injury, violence, or murder," Lubinets said.

As the Ombudsman noted, given the horrific footage, he appealed urgently:

  • To the ICRC and the UN to record another human rights violation by the terrorist country.
  • To Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to verify the identity of the killed prisoner and the fact of this crime.

"Let me remind you that prisoners of war are in the hands of an enemy state, and it is this state that is responsible for their treatment! That is, the responsibility for killing and maiming lies not only with Russian soldiers but with the Russian Federation itself!

I would also like to note that the ongoing war is a hybrid war. By posting similar photos and videos on social media and taking such actions, Russia wants to intimidate Ukrainians, both civilians and military. Allegedly, look what we are capable of. But looking at such footage, one thing is clear: it is impossible to forget and forgive! There must be punishment for crimes!" - Lubinets emphasized.
