The Ukrainian Defense Forces thwarted an attempt by Russian invaders to make a breakthrough in the Zaporizhzhia direction.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Anatolii Barhylevych, said this in an interview for the telethon, Censor.NET reports.

Bargylevych said that the enemy tried to break through the Ukrainian defences in the Zaporizhzhia direction. Ukrainian defenders launched preemptive strikes against the occupiers' units, disrupting their plans.

"We were aware of the enemy's intentions, so we launched preemptive strikes against the enemy's ground units, which prevented them from achieving their goals," said the Chief of the General Staff.

Barhylevych also commented on the difficult situation around the town of Kurakhove in the Donetsk region, where fierce fighting is taking place. The military said there is still a chance to hold the town.

"There is always a chance, and we will hold it as long as we can," he added.

Earlier, The Economist wrote that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing to repel a Russian offensive in Zaporizhzhia, while some Ukrainian commanders believe that Russia does not have enough forces to launch a major attack in this area.
