The Kremlin has said that negotiations would be the "best" way for Moscow to "achieve its goals" in the war against Ukraine.

This was stated by the spokesman of the Russian dictator Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the alleged refusal of Volodymyr Zelenskyy from the mediation efforts of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, ZN.UA writes, citing Russian information resources, Censor.NET reports.

Peskov said that Zelenskyy allegedly rejected Orban's mediation efforts, while "Putin, on the contrary, supported them."

The Kremlin spokesman claims that Kyiv is allegedly refusing to negotiate and "has not yet shown any desire to change the legal ban" on them.

"Therefore, the situation here is static. At the same time, President Putin has repeatedly said that Russia is open to negotiations and that negotiations would be the best way for us to achieve our goals," the Kremlin spokesman said.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he had proposed that Ukraine and Russia make a Christmas truce and a large-scale prisoner exchange.

Zelenskyy's advisor Dmytro Lytvyn said that the Hungarian side had not discussed any such proposals with Ukraine.

The Kremlin said that Russia, in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's initiative to hold a "Christmas truce" and exchange prisoners between Russia and Ukraine, had allegedly passed its proposals to Budapest, but ’Kyiv rejected the idea."
