Belarusian and Russian to be excluded from the list of languages to be protected in Ukraine

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a draft law that provides for an update of the list of languages to which the regime of support and special protection will apply.

This was announced by the government's representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk, Censor.NET reports.

"The draft law "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine in connection with the update of the official translation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages" has been approved. The draft law proposes to bring the title and provisions of the Law of Ukraine "On Ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages", as well as the provisions of the Laws of Ukraine "On National Minorities (Communities) of Ukraine" and "On Media" in line with the updated official translation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, in particular, the words "European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages" are proposed to be replaced with the words "European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages".

It is also proposed to update the list of languages to which the relevant support and special protection regime provided by the Charter will apply. In particular, it is envisaged that in Ukraine the provisions of the Charter will be applied to the following languages: Bulgarian, Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, Greek, German, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Hungarian, Czech and Hebrew," the statement said.

Currently, the provisions of the charter, ratified in 2003, apply to the following languages: Belarusian, Bulgarian, Gagauz, Greek, Jewish, Crimean Tatar, Moldovan, German, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Slovak, and Hungarian. Thus, the list excludes Belarusian and Russian.

The draft law is to be considered by the Verkhovna Rada for adoption.
