Thailand accepts Russia’s invitation to become BRICS partner country
The Thai government has accepted an invitation from Russia to become a BRICS partner state, as it will allegedly improve trade development.
This is reported by the Bangkok Post, Censor.NET reports.
It is noted that the BRICS leaders made a corresponding invitation in October at the 16th three-day summit of the bloc in Kazan.
Bangkok was expecting full membership in the BRICS by submitting an application. In the end, according to TASS, the Thai government decided that it would agree to be a partner.
"Becoming a BRICS Partner State is an important step for Thailand on its way to eventually joining BRICS as a full member," said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikondet Phalangkun.
The Thai Foreign Ministry has until the end of 2024 to inform Russia, which currently holds the BRICS presidency, of its decision.
Thailand believes that membership in BRICS will be beneficial for the country by increasing trade, investment, food and energy security.
In addition, the Foreign Ministry says it will help strengthen Thailand's role in promoting international cooperation and multilateralism, the Bangkok Post adds.
