Demobilization in Ukraine: Venislavskyi explains whether demobilization is possible

There will be no demobilization until the war is over and martial law is lifted in Ukraine. Now we can only talk about a hypothetical discharge from military service of a certain category of servicemen.

This was stated on the air of Radio NV by a member of the Defense Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, MP of the Servant of the People party, Fedir Venislavskyi, Censor.NET reports.

In particular, he commented on the statement of the Ministry of Defense that the draft law on demobilization has already been developed, but it will take another three months to work out mechanisms for replacing a significant number of people who will be dismissed.

According to him, even if the Verkhovna Rada adopts the law on demobilization, there will be no mass dismissal from military service.

Demobilization is possible in circumstances where the situation on the battlefield is such that we see the enemy being destroyed and pushed back from our territories. We are liberating our territories and have the opportunity to release people. Today, unfortunately, we have no reason to be so optimistic," he explained.

The MP emphasized that demobilization is out of the question without adequate mechanisms to attract those who can replace them to the Armed Forces and taking into account the time required for training.

"Work is already underway, so to speak, to audit the effectiveness of the use of those military units and the number of personnel in the Armed Forces, and the security and defense sector in general," Venislavskyi said.

He added that, according to publicly available information, the number of personnel in the Armed Forces is currently about one million. According to him, "approximately several hundred thousand people on the front line are currently taking part in the fighting."

"Until the war is over, we can only talk about the hypothetical possibility of discharging certain categories of military personnel from military service. The grounds for dismissal still exist. A significant number of people use such grounds every month. I can't say (the numbers - ed.), this is classified information. Dismissals from military service are always carried out on the grounds provided for by the law on military duty and military service," the "servant of the people" said.

Therefore, Venislavskyi added, we should not expect mass dismissals after 2-3 years of service during a full-scale war in the near future.

As a reminder, on April 11, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law on mobilization. It obliged the Ministry of Defense to develop a draft law on demobilization within eight months.

The Ministry of Defense had to prepare the relevant draft law by December 18.

According to media reports, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has asked the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence to postpone the deadline for drafting a bill on the conditions for demobilization of military personnel during martial law until March 18, 2025 .
