The United States wants Ukraine to hold presidential and parliamentary elections after a possible ceasefire agreement is concluded.

This was stated by US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, as quoted by Reuters, Censor.NET reports .

Trump' s special envoy said that Ukraine "should hold" presidential and parliamentary elections, which are prohibited by Ukrainian law during martial law.

Kellogg noted that most democratic countries hold elections during wartime, which is "very important."

"Most democratic countries hold elections during wartime. I think it is very important. I think it's good for democracy. That's the beauty of a strong democracy, that you have more than one person potentially running," Trump's special envoy said.

Reuters, citing sources, writes that Trump's peace plan is still under development and no political decisions have been made, but that Kellogg and other White House officials have been discussing the option of "pushing Ukraine to agree to elections as part of an initial truce with Russia" in recent days.

The agency's sources also say that Trump's team is also discussing whether to seek an initial ceasefire before working on a more permanent agreement. They add that if the election is held, the winner could be responsible for negotiating a long-term deal with Russia.

According to two Reuters sources in the Ukrainian government, the Trump administration has not yet officially asked Ukraine to hold presidential elections before the end of this year.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that according to the law, elections, including local ones, can only take place in Ukraine after the war is over.
