Ukraine does not need peacekeepers, but "deterrent force" with participation of United States, - Dutch Foreign Minister Veldkamp

Veldkamp

Any potential peace agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation should include not peacekeeping forces, but "deterrence forces", which should include Western countries with some participation of the United States.

This was stated by Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"Perhaps not with soldiers on the ground, but with all the means that European countries lack, which have not spent enough on defense for years. We are talking about air transportation and intelligence gathering. There must be support from the United States," the minister emphasized.

Veldkamp also noted that the Netherlands could take part in the creation of such security forces, but emphasized that the government has a unified position. At the same time, the leader of the far-right Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, later said on social media site X that he opposed sending the Dutch military to Ukraine.

On Monday, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof traveled to Paris to participate in an emergency meeting of European leaders to discuss the geopolitical tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine. Veldkamp refused to disclose details of the talks, saying: "Putin should not see our cards."

Peacekeeping forces in Ukraine

Earlier, it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron would discuss with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine if an agreement is reached to end the current phase of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk denied that Polish troops would be sent to Ukraine after the ceasefire.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas assessed the possibility of sending a European peacekeeping mission to Ukraine.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crozetto expressed his readiness to support a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine if peace is achieved.

In turn, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called these discussions "premature."

Germany, together with its partners, will consider the possible deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of "security guarantees" only after the conditions are created, namely a ceasefire with Russia.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that several countries are currently considering participation in a potential contingent of Western allies in Ukraine. However, specific plans for the deployment of foreign troops are still under discussion.
