In Odesa, the assassination of the head of a public law enforcement unit ordered by the Russian secret service was prevented.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the SSU press service.
The Russian special services wanted to carry out an "exemplary" liquidation of a figure who publicly supported mobilisation. In this way, the enemy wanted to sow panic and destabilise the socio-political situation in the region.
"It has also been established that after the successful execution of the murder, the Russian special services planned to order the murder of other activists with a public pro-Ukrainian position. However, Ukrainian law enforcement officers conducted a multi-stage operation and imitated the murder to find and detain a hidden enemy agent," the statement said.
The detainee is a 43-year-old Ukrainian citizen who came to the attention of Russian special services in 2017 when he worked in the security service of one of the Russian oligarchic clans. After the full-scale invasion, communication with him was restored.
His task was to find a killer who could carry out a contract killing for $80,000.
The SSU identified a potential "performer" for the agent. The fake "killer" acted under the control of law enforcement officers: he purchased a gun with ammunition, "completed" the task and filmed the victim's "murdered body" on his phone camera. After the imitation of the murder, the "killer" handed over to his client the confirming photo and video files from the scene.
Law enforcers detained a Russian agent red-handed when he was about to hand over "evidence" of a contract killing to a Russian curator.
He was detained in a public place, and was carrying an F-1 combat grenade, the use of which could have led to human casualties, and a mobile phone with evidence of communication with his Russian handler.
He has been served a notice of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including Article 115 (2) (6), (11) (2) (completed attempted murder committed on a contract basis), Article 263 (1) (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives).
The issue of additional qualification of the detainee's criminal actions under Part 2 of Art. 111 (high treason committed under martial law) is also being decided.
He is currently in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
