On Friday, 3 January, a minibus driver hit a 14-year-old teenager from Ukraine on a pedestrian crossing and fled the scene. The man had a previous criminal record and did not have a valid driver's licence at the time of the accident.

What is known about the accident?

As noted, after the accident, a passer-by, a soldier, was the first to help the boy. The victim was taken to hospital, but as a result of serious head and chest injuries, the boy died in hospital.

Today, on 6 January, the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office reported that the deceased boy was a 14-year-old Ukrainian.

The victim is a citizen of Ukraine. The attacker is a Polish citizen. After the attack, the suspect hid the minibus on the outskirts of Warsaw. There, he was drinking alcohol with a family member," said Piotr Skiba, a spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw, at a press conference.

Detention of the perpetrator

The prosecutor's office noted that "it will be known tomorrow, 7 January, after law enforcement officers talk to the victim's mother".

According to the Polish newspaper, police detained the wanted 43-year-old minibus driver the next day, on 4 January. The suspect was in a state of intoxication during the arrest.

"It was established that the offender worked for one of the courier companies operating in Warsaw. This, in turn, made it possible to identify the car, its parking location, and the person driving the car at the time of the incident," the police said.

The man is a Polish citizen.

According to the prosecutor's office, "he already had previous convictions, in particular for drug possession, as well as for helping foreigners cross the border illegally".

The prosecutor's office spokesperson also said that "the prosecutor will submit a motion to the court to impose a preventive measure in the form of detention".

The driver is charged with two articles - committing a fatal road accident and fleeing the scene, which provides for a sentence of imprisonment for a term of 5 to 20 years, the prosecutor's office spokesman added.
