Police in Dnipropetrovsk region detained two deputies and a criminal leader who extorted $60,000 from a former deputy mayor.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the Communications Department of the National Police.
As noted, operatives of the Strategic Investigations Department in the Dnipropetrovsk region and investigators of the regional police, with the force support of KORD officers and a special police regiment, detained three defendants while receiving a part of the "debt" from the victim - $22,000.
In total, a criminal authority and two current deputies of one of the city councils - heads of municipal enterprises - demanded $60,000. They claimed that this amount was allegedly owed to them by the former deputy mayor.
"For some time, the perpetrators exerted psychological pressure on the victim, threatening him and his family with physical violence. Later, they resorted to more radical actions: involving as yet unidentified persons, they threw stun grenades into the man's yard, set fire to his house and car. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, the victim was forced to agree to the criminal demands," the statement said.
Law enforcement officers detained the criminal boss and two deputies in accordance with the procedural procedure. Investigators, based on the evidence collected, served them with a notice of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 189 (extortion) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court remanded all the suspects in custody.
Further measures to identify all persons involved in this crime are underway
