Volunteer battalions laid a foundation of independent Ukraine ideology.
Speaking at "Dobrobaty" book presentation, co-authored by experts and journalists, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov reminded that volunteer battalions along with the National Guard units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were the first to face the militants in 2014. Not only did they stop the militants but also forced them to retreat, Censor.NET reports.
Thanks to the volunteers, Ukraine gained time to create a real army, the National Guard, an effective military-industrial complex, as well as got real weapons.
''We started with the volunteer battalions, and now we have a volunteer national army, volunteer National Guard and other volunteer police units," Turchynov said.
"Volunteer battalions laid a foundation of a strong patriotic ideology of an independent country, which is able to defend itself and able to win," Turchynov added.
